Focusing On The Present

Inclusion is at Our Core

Today, BMC remains one of the rare, successful public-private hospital mergers in the United States and is the largest safety net hospital in New England. The hospital is the primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine and we have 42 ACGME-accredited specialty and sub-specialty programs.

Good health for all citizens of the City of Boston is our primary goal and helps guide the activities we undertake every day. In order to do that, our employees are deeply involved in the community, and our commitment to recruit, train and retain a diverse workforce is critical.

Our Employees

Meet Latchman Hiralall, Food Pantry Manager

After emigrating from Guyana 29 years ago Latchman Hiralall began working at BMC, which has been his first and only place of employment since then. During his time at BMC, he has earned his degree in Food Systems Management and is now a registered dietetic technician. He spends most of his day helping to give dietary-restricted food to patients who are referred to him by their clinicians. Patients are referred by their clinicians for a balance of fresh and packaged food to support their unique dietary needs.

The food pantry currently serves an average of 7,000 patients per month and brings in approximately 12,000 pounds of food each week from the Greater Boston Food Bank and other sources, such as Ocean State Job Lot.

Our Patients

Ligardine Myrthal, former patient at BMC

Meet Ligardine Myrthal, a former patient at BMC

Ligardine Myrthal's life turned tragic when she was rushed to the operating room for an emergency cesarean section. Her unborn baby's heart had stopped beating and now every second was crucial to the baby's survival. Her daughter, Serena, was born moments later, limp and virtually lifeless.

After seventeen agonizing minutes, Serena's heart began beating; however, BMC's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit knew that only extraordinary measures could save Serena from a lifetime of disability due to the oxygen deprivation her brain had suffered.

In response, the team initiated a Cool Cap protocol to rapidly cool Serena’s brain using flowing water for three days. Serena is now growing into a happy toddler.

Diversity In Action

Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery: Comprehensive trans-friendly services including behavioral health, endocrinology and surgery.

What It’s Like to Work at BMC

“I work on various multi-year strategic projects including supporting the expansion of the Observation Unit and co-leading the THRIVE Social Determinants of Health Screening & Referral Program aimed to improve health outcomes by identifying and addressing patients’ social needs. I also serve as President of the BMC Young Professionals Group, an employee resource group that provides unique opportunities for professional development, volunteering, and wellness to members of the BMC/BUMG community.

What I enjoy the most about working at BMC is that I am surrounded by inspiring, mission-driven colleagues. We are here to partner with our patients to find innovative ways to improve not only their individual health, but the health of our broader community. I appreciate the opportunity to be on teams with such creative, caring, collaborative, and entrepreneurial individuals.”
